1.     POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the General Superintendent, plans, directs, and coordinates the day-to-day activities at the assigned job site.  Responsible for supervising all Leads, operators, laborers and sub-contractors on-site and is to ensure that the cost, quality, and schedule goals for the job are accomplished through effective use of personnel, materials, sub-contractors and equipment.

2.     POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

This position requires an individual with strong knowledge of construction labor, equipment and materials, and the procedures for completing the jobs assigned according to approved construction methods, and within approved construction codes.

This individual must have strong leadership skills, as well as be able to communicate effectively with management, customers, employees and other miscellaneous personalities that may visit a construction site from time to time.

This position requires a self-starting, take-charge individual, strong motivation and interpersonal skills.  Must be able to motivate, train, and monitor the employees by maintaining company guidelines and insure that these standards of performance are met at all times.  The Superintendent must be able to supervise, instruct and objectively evaluate the performance of workers and Sub-contractors.


3.     REQUIREMENTS:

Listed below are the specific knowledge, skills and/or abilities necessary to meet the minimum job requirements.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education:  High School diploma or GED or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:  Minimum of five years experience in the construction excavation industry with at least one or more years as a Superintendent.

Language Ability:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings and instructions.  Ability to write reports.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from customers, subcontractors, inspectors and employees.

Math Ability:  Ability to perform basic math calculations: add, subtract, multiply, divide, fractions, decimals and percents. 

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Skills, Knowledge:  Be able to read and understand blue prints, drawings, building codes and other various tools and forms of communications used on construction job sites. Possesses a sound understanding of the application and use of lines, grades and elevations.  Adept in the use of rotary and pipe lasers.  Have sufficient knowledge of materials, equipment and tools commonly used in the construction process.

Computer Skills:  PC literacy desirable but not necessary. 

Physical:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Body Positions:  The job requires sitting up to one-third of the time, which includes sitting while driving a motor vehicle or construction equipment.  Standing and walking two-thirds of the time, primarily at job sites.  Body movements of turning the head and torso, bending, reaching and flexing the arms are required two-thirds of the time and bending the wrists and use of the hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel tools and equipment is required approximately one-third of the time.

Body Senses:  Must have command of all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.

Strength: Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds materials and equipment and products.

Working Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  The job functions are primarily carried out primarily at Construction Sites, but may include Shop/Garage, Yard visits, and/or other locations typical within the construction industry.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The noise level in the environment is usually moderate, but loud equipment and construction type sounds can occur at times. The Superintendent may be frequently subjected to work days in excess of eight hours and weeks in excess of forty hours. The Superintendent is exposed to stressful conditions that may be encountered during budget shortfalls, personnel changes or shortages, economic downturns and other financial pressures and concerns.






4.     AUTHORITY and ACCOUNTABILITY:

4.1             Authority:                The Superintendent is given full authority to conduct, supervise and perform the operational affairs of each project as directed by the General Superintendent. This authority includes:  scheduling, ordering, receiving of materials and supplies and managing productivity for the assigned project including all job site supervision of employees and sub contractors.  This includes making recommendations regarding the promotion, demotion, disciplinary action, and termination of employees assigned to the work site. It also includes taking any reasonable action necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position, as long as such action does not deviate from established company policies and is consistent with sound business practices and ethical behavior.

4.2              Accountability:  The Superintendent is directly accountable to the General Superintendent of the Company.


5.     ESENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

5.1             Insures that all employees and subcontractors report to their job on time and work the hours scheduled for the day.

5.2             Maintains safe, clean, organized and ecologically compliant work sites.

5.3             Works with the General Superintendent and, if necessary VP of Operations, establishes work plans, prepares work schedules and employee assignments for each job.

5.4             Works with the General Superintendent to schedule labor and equipment for each job.

5.5             Works with the General Superintendent to schedule subcontractors for each job.

5.6             Reports labor and machine hours through Heavy Job daily and provides the General Superintendent with an accurate accounting of labor, equipment and subcontractor time, as well as materials and supplies used. 

5.7             The Superintendent will have the payroll, initialed by employee, and required paperwork to the General Superintendent no later than the time designated on Monday morning.

5.8             Follows policies established regarding the Purchase Order procedures and authorized suppliers for all orders for job supplies and materials.

5.9             Works to maintain the project schedule and labor, material and equipment costs at or below budget. 

5.10         Advises General Superintendent promptly if problems occur on the job which affect budgeted costs.

5.11         Maintains high quality workmanship standards at the job site by Company employees and sub contractors.

5.12         Carries out daily equipment maintenance at the job site and promptly notifies the Director of Operations when equipment repairs are needed.

5.13         Has necessary fuels, lubricants and other supplies necessary to operate and maintain equipment at the job site.

5.14         Provides technical advice to personnel at the job site and resolves problems.

5.15         Assists the General Superintendent with performance evaluations of employees that have been under direct supervision on jobs.

5.16         Maintains good relations with the customers at the job sites and keeps the General Superintendent informed about customer interactions.

5.17         Participates in developing and implementing company policy, procedures, goals and objectives.


6.0                            PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Management will make specific evaluations on a semi-annual basis for this position on each of the following performance criteria.  Scoring will be determined on a scale of 1 through 5, with 1 representing poorest performance and 5 being outstanding performance. A tally and total performance score will be provided at the end of the evaluation.

Ensures that equipment maintenance is carried out daily at the job site and promptly notifies the General Superintendent when equipment repairs are needed.

6.11         

Has necessary fuels, lubricants and other supplies necessary to operate and maintain equipment at the job site.

6.12         

Provides technical advice to personnel at the job site and resolves problems.             

6.13         

Assists the General Superintendent in performance evaluations of foremen, operators, and laborers according to their performance criteria and reviews evaluations with them when requested by the General Superintendent.

6.14         

Maintains good relations with the customers at the job sites and keeps the General Superintendent informed about customer interactions.

6.15         

Participates in developing and implementing company policy, procedures goals and objectives.

6.16         

Makes best use of work time to complete projects and assignments on      schedule.

6.17         

Consistently demonstrates ability to establish and manage priorities.

6.18         

Is a self-starter and manifests a proactive approach to all aspects of his/her responsibility.

6.19         

Recognizes and performs tasks that need to be completed, although not directly assigned – assists others as needed.

EVALUATION REPORT

Greatest consideration in establishing an evaluation has been developed by evaluating task performance on a line item basis (as provided for above).  This is where specific performancehighlights or concerns can best be located and addressed, and where future performance can be benchmarked and tracked against prior performance.  The appropriate evaluation is not complete, however, until the areas of improvement have been identified and the methodology for achieving the desired improvements has been agreed.  Comments below are documentation of that agreement.

I will also be provided a copy of an Employee Personnel & Policy Manual, detailing other requirements and responsibilities, in addition to those stated in this document.  I also understand that although there are areas, which can be delegated to other members, I am fully accountable for assuring that these areas are carried out on a daily or weekly basis. I also understand that the functional role of Superintendent cannot be delegated to another member of our management team.
