Job: Director, Surgical Services

 Locations (Facilities): Brunswick, GA 31520

Southeast Georgia Health System has an opportunity for a Director, Surgical Services to join our team!

The Director, Surgical Services: 
  • Under the administrative direction of the Vice President of Patient Care Services, has the responsibility and authority for leading and directing the delivery of outcome focused care for all Surgical Services sites on or affiliated with the Brunswick Campus, and consultative responsibility to Surgical Services Camden Campus
  • Provides administrative and clinical leadership in collaboration with senior management and medical staff to foster compliance with practice standards for performance excellence
  • The Director of Surgical Services is accountable for strategic planning, fiscal management and procurement of the necessary resources to accomplish patient care programs that advance the organizational mission and objectives; and to develop a surgical practice environment that encourages and supports synergistic relationships among the professionals and encourages innovation and creativity, and is responsive to customers needs.
The Director, Surgical Services performs the following essential responsibilities: 
  1. Ensures that the Surgical Services structure and operations contribute to Southeast Georgia Health System's mission, vision and strategic plan. Interprets the organizational vision to employees and helps employees integrate the vision with the realities of workplace demand. Focuses on the future, and is able to translate the future and necessary change into reality-based behaviors for self and staff.
  2. Accomplishes effective fiscal management, by demonstrating responsible preparation, monitoring and maintenance of annual operating and capital budgets within established financial goals. Administers annual budgets that support the business plan for existing projected services, based on analysis of market share, cost of service and reimbursement trends from multiple payers. Communicates fiscal parameters and achievements to the staff regularly and clarifies changes as they occur. Measures resource consumption and associated costs by monitoring revenues and controlling expenses without compromising quality of care.
  3. Accountable for appropriate resource management to support clinical practice and patient care, that facilitates efficiency of operations. Utilizes the appropriate compliment of staff for service areas ensuring proper skill mix to support patient population acuity. Maintains an awareness of healthcare policies and economics and their impact on care delivery, managing resources accordingly. Evaluates and redesigns processes and systems to facilitate work and demonstrates proficiency in the use of the automated information system.  Makes relevant business decisions based on critical thinking, human relation's skills and organizational knowledge, which are viable in terms of organizational philosophy, financial climate and available resources.
  4. Develops and supports integrated clinical systems which are multi-disciplinary and outcome focused. Develops and sustains an environment that fosters excellence in clinical practice and patient care through planning and implementation of programs that support collaboration among nurses, anesthesia providers and surgeons. Cultivates a philosophy of ownership among the professional groups and facilitates intra- and interdisciplinary conflict resolution.
  5. Builds and sustains a priority of customer focus and satisfaction, for both internal and external customers. Communicates effectively at all levels of the organization and with all customers, both verbally and in writing. Builds and sustains collaborative relationships with patients, families, employees and physicians. Responses to issues of customer dissatisfaction with an open mind and a sense of urgency.
  6. Leads and facilitates performance improvement activities which are congruent with the organization's Performance Improvement Plan. Provides for ongoing performance improvement systems that are an integral part of the Continuous Performance Enhancement, assesses customer satisfaction, evaluates patient outcomes and holds staff accountable for standards of care and service delivery. Develops unit-based mechanisms to assess the response to care from patients, families and physicians. Engages in public relations and problem solving relative to customer service. Avoids and reduces negative outcomes through application of risk management practices in areas of (1) patient, visitor, staff safety; (2) medication errors; (3) falls; (4) quality control.
  7. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships among disciplines. Ensures that care regimens are coordinated interdependently with all members of the surgical team. Participates in joint planning and program development with all surgical and other health team members to improve patient care and meet changing patient needs.  Utilizes the negotiation process effectively in dealing with colleagues, customers, payers and competitors to achieve win-win decisions and outcomes. Is attuned to and performs well in the organization's political climate. Role models an environment of open communication, trust and respect.
  8. Participates in the strategic planning activities of Patient Care Services and is accountable for developing a strategic plan for Surgical Services. Networks with other organizations and demonstrates knowledge of internal and external environmental issues that can impact existing or proposed services.
  9. Accountable for assuring organizational compliance with professional, regulatory and governmental standards of care. Assumes responsibility for remaining current regarding standards of care established by regulatory agencies. Able to determine, translate and implement relevant implications of practice standards to surgical services. Communicates areas of potential risk for non-compliance to Administration, with regard to state, federal and JCAHO standards.
  10. Able to create a synergistic environment among diverse healthcare providers that enhances change. Identifies opportunities for change and capitalizes on them by eliminating services and processes that have outgrown their usefulness and creates new priorities and directions. Manages change effectively with sensitivity to employee, physician and other stakeholder issues. Engages staff, physicians and colleagues in the change processes. Monitors effectiveness of change overtime.
  11. Accountable for facilitating the development of licensed and non-licensed health care personnel. Actively participates in recruitment, hiring, counseling, evaluating and educating staff with emphasis on retention.  Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, by actively participating in the coaching and mentoring of staff. Balances valuing employees as an organizational asset and the best interest of the organization when making recommendations for compensation and benefit adjustments. Assures staff competence to provide services to a wide spectrum of patients from infant to geriatric by periodic monitoring of defined competencies appropriate to Surgical Services and the Health Care System as a whole. Interprets job expectations, lines of authority and accountability to staff, communicating individual expectations, service goals and objectives consistently, utilizing individual conferences, staff meetings and written communication. Develops and adjusts staffing patterns based on staffing efficiency data, budgetary guidelines and volume and intensity of service.
  12. Provides Surgical Services specific mechanisms of measurement for defined processes that effect safe patient care and are consistent with the organization's Patient Safety Program. Measures the performance of processes that are identified as error prone or high risk, analyzing data for variations and initiating corrective actions to reduce patient risk and enhance safe care. Leads by example to set the tone for staff participation in interdisciplinary performance improvement activities and activities for improving patient safety.
The ideal Director, Surgical Services candidate should possess the following minimum qualifications: 
  • Bachelors degree required; masters degree in nursing, healthcare, or business preferred 
  • Minimum 3 years experience in the management of Surgical Services in a complex organization.  Experience with Ambulatory Surgery Center required. 
  • Current Georgia RN license or license eligible preferred 
  • Interpersonal skills for building collaborative relationships 
  • Personal computer skills 
  • Knowledge of reimbursement for surgical procedures
