We are looking for exceptionally talented Control Systems Engineers - DCS with experience in industrial manufacturing, in our Sergeant Bluff, Iowa location (Sioux City, Iowa area). Relocation assistance available!
     
This position is part of our Port Neal Plant Expansion Project – you will be on the ground floor of this exciting and groundbreaking 1.7 billion dollar plant expansion. This is a long-term position, not a contract role, and CF Industries offers a variety of exciting opportunities through the organization for professional growth and advancement.
             
Position Description:
The Control Systems Engineer coordinates technical support for the Port Neal Nitrogen Complex Distributed Control Systems (DCS), including the historian and advanced process control functions. The primary function of this position is to provide direct technical support and coordinate additional support resources to the DCS, and develop the expertise of instrument/electrical group on system maintenance. This includes monitoring the control systems, on-going resolution of problems that arise, and directing improvements to the system through upgrades of the software or changes in configuration.
              
This position requires consulting, coordinating, and skill development with site employees, and involves being a liaison with the outside DCS vendor. Secondary duties include instrumentation field work on all control instruments and systems to ensure on-going plant reliability. This position will be an integral part of the Port Neal Expansion Project team.
      
Key Job Elements:
  • Planning and Organizing
    • Assist in the planning, acquisition, installation, and maintenance of new DCS system(s) and maintenance of existing systems
    • Coordinate the installation of new software packages or upgrades to existing software
    • Coordinate testing of all new software and resolve hardware issues by utilizing the onsite support team as well as any/all outside services as required
    • Determine and monitor system spare part requirements. Network with other system users through manufacturer’s user group seminars/conferences to implement system enhancements or resolve problems
    • Develop configuration procedures (standards) to ensure consistency in programming
    • Organize appropriate offsite training for Maintenance personnel
    • Plan and perform hardware and software maintenance
    • Provide operation and maintenance training to production and maintenance personnel
    • Develop disaster recovery plans and procedures
    • Assist in the budgeting and planning process for all changes and upgrades required by all DCS, including negotiating technical support agreements
      
  • System Coordination and Development
    • Manage the DCS on a day-to-day basis, resolving all error messages or problems, utilizing additional resources if required (both on and off site)
    • Coordinate with personnel in production and maintenance as required, to monitor and tune the DCS for peak plant performance
    • Coordinate DCS maintenance activities including those that require the involvement of other CF employees or outside support personnel
    • Develop control system software design, configuration and testing to provide effective operation of the plant processes
    • Develop safety system software design, configuration and testing to ensure fail safe condition of the plant during faults or process excursions
    • Design control system hardware modifications to accommodate system expansions and upgrades
    • Document any changes or additions to the DCS, including system configurations, loop configurations, alarm/trip settings and drawings. Conduct system “back-up” and storage of software. Co-ordinate all documentation changes with the engineering/drafting department
    • Facilitate DCS knowledge base and skill training for appropriate CF personnel and to develop on site competencies within the I&E technicians, as well as enhance 24 hour coverage capabilities
     
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Controls Engineering or related technical degree required
  • 3+ years of proven, direct experience with Distributed Control Systems maintenance, preferably in a chemical facility
  • Design and implementation of Yokogawa DCS control systems is preferred
  • Experience in fertilizer industry with NH3, urea, UAN and Nitric Acid manufacturing processes helpful
  • Must be able to travel and enter plant operating sites to access and inspect equipment (Inspections will include utilizing ladders and platforms in excess of 100 feet, entering confined spaces and capable of utilizing all required personal equipment)
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and effective team skills with demonstrated proficiency in computer applications
